If you’re pricing up monoblock driveways in Glasgow, the part that decides whether yours lasts isn’t the blocks on top — it’s the base underneath them.
I’m John, and I’ve been laying driveways for 35+ years. Nearly every drive I’m called out to fix failed below the surface, not on it.
The before-and-after above is a drive that used to pool water and sit unevenly. What changed it wasn’t a fancier block.
It was the excavation, the sub-base and the drainage being built properly before a single block went down.
What you get when you go with us:
- A price that matches the final bill — no surprises added at the end
- A crew that turns up each day and sweeps the site down before leaving
- 35+ years of monoblock drives across Glasgow behind the work

We had them redo our back garden, including laying a new patio, sorting out drainage issues, and fixing up some fencing, and they handled everything brilliantly. Their quote were clear and fair, no hidden costs or surprises which we really appreciated. Communication was great throughout always keeping us updated and checking in on small details before making any changes. The guys turned up on time everyday and worked really hard, even when the weather weren’t great. They were polite, friendly, and always happy to explain what they was doing. You could tell they knew their stuff and actually cared about doing a proper job. Even when we asked for a few small changes, nothing was too much trouble. I was given a recommendation by a freind from work as he had a patio built couple of years ago in his back garden by John. Me and my husband gave him a call and everything got arranged very prompt & professional. He came out to see us a few days later and gave us some good ideas on what we were thinking about and how it could take shape. It took about week to get a quote which we was happy to pay and everything got organised from that point on which really took a lot of our mind as this was big deal for us as we'd never had anything major work done at our home since we moved to glasgow and we just wanted something easy to maintain but looked really nice. The work they did was outstanding and I'm delighted with how everything turned out. From the start right to the end they worked hard, were respectful, tidy up every day and got rid of all the old grass and dirt that came out.Posted on Google MICHAEL brummondTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Why most driveways fail below the surface
When a monoblock drive sinks, pools or grows weeds through the joints within a couple of years, the blocks are almost never the cause. The ground prep underneath them is.
And it’s the one part a cheap quote quietly cuts — because you’ll never see it once the drive is finished.
We don’t cut it. Here’s what goes in underneath, and why each part matters:
- Excavation — we dig out any soft ground and set the drive below your damp-proof course, clear of the air bricks. Get the depth wrong and you invite damp against the house.
- Terram membrane — laid over the ground to stabilise it, so the stone can’t work down into it over time.
- Type 1 sub-base — compacted to around 100mm in 50mm layers, so it sets solid all the way through. This is the layer that stops the sinking.
- Concrete edge restraints — the part most people have never heard of, and the one I’d never skip. Without them the blocks spread sideways and the drive lets go from the edges in.
- Screeded sand bed — a levelling layer of concrete sand, screeded dead flat with battens and a spirit level. It’s what the blocks sit on, so getting it level keeps the finished surface true.
- Laying & jointing — the blocks are laid and cut in, then kiln-dried sand is brushed into every joint and set with a vibrating plate so they lock together.
None of this shows in a photo. All of it is the difference between a drive that’s still level in ten years and one you’re apologising for in two.

Will your driveway need SUDS Drainage sign-off?
If your new drive sits between your house and the road, it isn’t allowed to just shed rainwater onto the pavement — and that’s the bit most quotes stay quiet about.
We flag anything relevant on the visit — before you commit, not after the diggers arrive.
In Scotland, a hard surface at your home usually counts as permitted development, so no planning permission is needed. The exceptions: if it sits between the house and a road, or you’re in a conservation area or near a listed building.
Where it does sit between house and road, it has to deal with water — either built from permeable paving, or laid so runoff drains to a porous area of garden.
There’s no square-metre cut-off in the Scottish rule, so ignore the “5m²” figure you’ll see on English sites. It doesn’t apply here.
We’ll tell you where you stand on the visit. It’s worth confirming with your council too, and you can read the rule on mygov.scot.
Where drainage does need handling, there are two honest ways to do it:
- A channel drain carrying water to a soakaway or permeable area on your own land
- Permeable blocks laid on clean open-graded stone, so water soaks straight through
A channel drain only counts if it keeps the water on your property — not if it runs out onto the road.
Why Glasgow homeowners go for monoblock
Monoblock earns its keep in a wet climate. Laid on a proper base, it gives you:
- A hard-wearing surface that stands up to cars, weather and years of use
- Real kerb appeal — it lifts the whole front of the house
- Easy repairs — if one area gets marked or dug up, the blocks lift and relay, so you mend a patch instead of the whole drive
